Cloak and Dagger Part Two And Intermission – Encountering The Unknown
by Captain Walcott Pierce & Lieutenant Commander Julie Cho & Lieutenant Henk O'brien & Lieutenant Richard Solomon
The team onboard the warbird has just gained access to the bridge. All is seemingly calm, and the away team seems to be having no problems.
Julie looked at the view screen wondering what was going on.
Henk was almost lying in his chair with his feet on the console. He know it was tempting but he could resist the temptation. For now.
"If this keeps up I might need some coffe to keep me awake."
=Meanwhile In Sickbay=
Ensign Jonas Weathers was monitoring the marine patient who recently got drunk and then started experienceing what seemed like a seizure. The man was moved to sickbay shortly before the away team went over to the warbird.
Monitoring the marine's heartbeat, the ensign was startled by a nurse's scream on the other side of sickbay. He turned quickly, but not quick enough. The marine whom the ensign was just monitoring snapped the ensign's neck.
=Bridge=
All is normal, when the ship is jolted by what felt like a weapons hit- however, no weapons have been fired.
"What the hell was that?" she yelled
Henk was almost jolted out of his chair. He quickly began to stabalize the ship. He scanned the surrounding space again just to make sure there where no ships around.
"We have an explosion near sickbay." ehnk said as the information came across his display. "I knocked out all sensors on that deck."
"Find out what is going on. Red Alert" she ordered
Yes Ma'am." was the only thing henk said as he stood up and walked to the turbolift. AFter a few seconds he was greeted by a group of security officers.
"What happend?"
There was an explosion. "The security guard began. "Corridors 4 and 5 are full of debry. We where just starting our sweep."
henk knobbed.
"Keep an open comlink, and cover each other back."
With his rifle pointed he began to scout the deck for anything wrong.
The deck was dark with occasional sparks bursting from the bulkheads. Up ahead, shadows seem to be going by with no person nearby.
Henk felt his heart race. This seems to close to the West ridge. But if you saw an shadow there, you where already dead. Slwoly they walked forward. He turned an corner and saw nothing.
"Where is everybody?" He asked to himself
From behind the team, a phaser burst streams by, followed by another taking out one of the security team members accompanying Lt. O'Brien.
"Oh... "Henk cursed as the first shot passed him by an inch. He took cover and looked down the corridor. As shot passed just over his head. Henk took aim and took one shot. He was suprised to saw an starfleet officer falling forward. After a few seconds the officer stood up again. Henk looked with horror and started to shoot as he made his way back to the nearest jefferey tube.
"This is not good."
Henk pressed his combadge.
"Henk to Bridge, we are under attack from our own peoeple. Phasers seems to have no eefect. I suggest to lock down this entire deck."
"Very well lock down the deck and fall back" she said
"Yes Ma'am." Henk said as he looked around to find a better defensible position.
Very slwoly henk and the security guard where falling back. nothing that they came across was defensible. They needed something safe before they could find a way to deal with this threat.
"Somebody find out what the HELL is going on" she yelled to the staff
Henk walked quickly to a control panel. He pressed a few buttons and looked at the data.
"We are the only one left on this deck, lets go." henk said to the guard.
As quickly as there feet could carry them they walked to the nearest jeffery tube. As they jumped into the tube another phaser burst passed over there head.
"Sorry poeple, but I'm leaving." Henk said as he closed ther door, and thereby sealing the deck.
Quickly they climbed towards the bridge. After a couple of minutes they arrived.
"Commander," Henk said as he climbed out of the tube. "The people that attacke us where our own. And I beleive that they where not alive. I saw one doctor with severe burns. He couldn't be alive."
"Ok, seal off the lower deck to keep them out of this area" she ordered
The Ensign manning the Science station looked over, "Commander Cho, Ma'am, I believe now might be an opportune moment to field test teh Security upgrades I was experimenting with earlier."
Cho looked at the man and for a moment didn't recognise him in standard uniform. This was the ensign who had been developing the holographic Security guards she had bumped inot only minuts earlier. How did he get changed and up to the bridge so fast?
"I would also like your permission to monitor their performance directly. It will allow me to better ascertain the threat potential and modify the programing accordingly."
Henk looked at the new person standing on the bridge, "I don't know what your talking about, but the stun seetings on the phasers dind't work. " Henk said as he was still trying to recover what he saw. "I recommand to set the phasers to the highest setting."
Ensign Benaniah nodded to Henk, "Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate your experience and take you suggestion under advisement. I do not intend on using my phaser, however. If you would like to accompany me, you are of course at liberty too, given the Lt Commander's permission."
Impulsive Henk walked towards the turbolift.
"i wil meet you on that deck in about 5 minutes." Henk said. "I need to pick up someting."
"Hurry up" she said
When Henk arrived Benaniah was wearing the all black and webbing of Starfleet Special Forces and was carrying a number of weapons in small holsters on his hips and back. He was standing next to two Starfleet Security officers carrying Type II Phasers.
He looked at henk and passed him a weapon. It was about two feet long with a metal stock and wide apeture. "Scatter gun. Has quite a kick. Don't fire it in the direction of allies. Ready?"
Henk made sure that his sword was easy to reach and looked up.
"Ready as I'l ever be." He said as he took a deep breath. "Let's do this.""
Ben turned to the two security guards, "This deck has been comprpomised. Lt O'Brien and myself are to be recognised as the only legitimate crew on this level. All other personnel are to be restrained using whatever force necessary. Initiate sweep."
"Aye, sir," They replied in unison then fell into a comfortable walking pattern as if this was merely a training exercise. Ben signalled that Henk and he should follow behind a little way.
"Don't use your gun, unless you have no other option. I want to see how they handle this."
After a few meters the security guards suddenly dropped into a slight crouch and one called, "Halt where you are!"
Henk and Ben caught up enough to see around the curved corridor. There were two starfleet officers in medical uniforms. They were moving very slowly but reaching for their phaser's.
"Gun!" yelled one of the Secuirty officer's and both drew their phasers. The 'zombies' took aim and pulled the trigger.
Nothing happened.
Both Security officers fired their phasers. Both beams caught their target directly in the chest.
Nothing happened.
Ben smiled slightly, "All ship's phasers are linked to the main computer. It measn if they are using our weapons we can deactivate them. Now let's see what they do."
Both Zombies seemed to consider for a while then threw away their weapon. They lurched quickly towards the security guards, both of who fired again, still with no effect. Henk moved to enagage the Zombies but Ben held up a warning hand. The first zombie reached a security guard and made a lumbering dive... passing straight through the holographic image. The second zombie was wildy swinging punches at the empty image of the second security guard who was making no attempt to protect himself.
"Now, You take the one on the left, and I'll take the one on the right, yes?" Ben asked Henk, pulling a darkened knife from a sheath.
Henk slowly pulled his sword and just knodded.
with an burst of speed Henk jumped forward. The zombie looked his way but was to late to stop the sword. The zombie's head started to roll over the floor. Henk made sure that the body was dead before he started to look how his new partner was handeling himself.
Ben steped deftly up to the zombie, waiting for it to swing a punch. As it did he ducked under and ran his blade along the skin acros teh ribs. The knife split the uniform and left a deep cut that was far from fatal. Ben stepped back and the zombie turned to pursue him. Then it stopped and started to shake. Henk noticed Ben was counting down silently and when he reached zero the zombie colapsed on the floor in convulsions.
"A particularly effectie toxin that induces muscular spasms. Cuases the recipiant to loose complete control of their muscles. It won't kill a man but it will leave him lying twitching in his own filth for a few hours while you do whatever it is you needed to. I wouldn't normally use so big a dose, but I wanted to make sure."
He crouched down and looked at the spasming figure, "It is trying to use its eyes to see. What ever is doing this is still trapped by the bodies normal senses."
"Incoming," warned one of the holographic security officers.
Ben looked at Henk, "What do you want to do?"
Henk looked down the corridor and saw a group of zombies slowly making there way towards them.
"Do you have any more tricks up your sleeve that I need to know?" Henk asked
Ben looked at Henk, "Many. Quite a few you should not know about, also. We could stay and fight but, if this is some sort of infection, we could contract it too. You want to chance it?"
When he heard the word infection a chill ran down his spine.
"Don't say anything more about any infection." henk asid. "It's along story, and I don't want to tell it. We can trap them in forcefields? Maybe then we can find out what happend with our people."
Ben shrugged, "If they are trapped in the bodies as they apear to be it is worth a try. May help to contain any... complications. Computer, activate Quarantine forcefields on deck 4."
There was a buz and slight blue glow as each archway along the corridor they were in raised a forcefiled designed to limit infection and restrict personnel movement. The zombies at the far end of the corridor came up hard against the barrier and then stopped to consider their next move.
"We better get back to the bridge. Computer, execute cascade forcefield manouver 3 from my position to turbo lift 4."
"Let's get moving then." Henk said as he started to move. "You intel right?"
As they walked the force fields dropped in front of them and then raised behind them.
"Not exactly. Officially I am a science officer. There are a limit to how many more of your questions I can answer for you. You may want to direct them at the CTO when she returns. Speaking of Science, I had better step of on this deck and grab my blue suit again.
The doors opened on Deck 3 and Ben stepped out. The doors closed again and the lift began to move. It opened on Deck 2 and Ben, in blue science uniform again, stepped back into the lift.
"What about yourself? Not many helmsman can wave a sword like that."
"Let's just say that I'm not an fan of phasers. When people come to close phasers doesn't do you any good." Henk said with an weak smile "I have shead enough blood already with this blade. Some bad memories also."
Ben just nodded. He was no stranger to close combat. The doors opened and they stepped back onto the bridge.
"Commander Cho, we believe the situation is contained. I am reluctant to take further action until we know more about the cause."
"Find out what is going on then report to the bridge I want all the lower decks sealed off. NOW" she asid
Henk walked behind Ben towards the Ops station. He made a few scans of the Romulan ship. He looked good at the data, because it didn't make any sense.
"I'm reading a small energy field coming from the warbird. What I'm not sure of." Henk said as he tried to figure out the data. "Ben you want to have a look. You are a science officer?"
Ben looked at Henk with slightly narrowed eyes. Was Henk trying to set him up?
Regardless he moved to the science station and called up the scans. It is blocking our transport and communication, but it is limited to a regular frequency range. We may be able to boost the gain on the communicator and penetrate the interference in a higher frequency band. I would check that with communications and you may have to route it through the Nav Deflector to get the appropriate power levels."
Henk looked at Ben.
"OK, Let's try that." Henk said. He stapt a bit closer so that only Ben could hear what they said.
"You know more about that stuff then me, so that's why I asked you. Nothing more."
Ben just gave a nod. He knew know that Henk would not give him away to the Command staff. Another ally was always a useful thing.
